Can You Talk To Your Guy About Hair Extensions?
It's often said that men prefer women who rock their natural hair instead of weaves. However, their celebrity crushes are often the total opposite! Why is it that men are more openly critical about their women wearing hair extensions?
This weekend, BET re-aired "Good Hair" the 2009 documentary narrated by Chris Rock. The film went to great lengths to get a deeper understanding of the multimillion dollar hair industry and the ways in which hairstyles of African-American women are judged in society. Although this wasn't my first time viewing the film, I became defensive this time around and with good reason.
Shot from a male's perspective, the documentary seemed to chastise women who preferred to wear extensions by focusing on the time and money that went into creating various looks. A lot has changed since the film first aired. For one, reality TV shows have causally showed stars getting extensions installed and we're learning that more and more of our favorite stars are avid weave wearers!
The men we date want us to look good, so should it matter whether or not we use our own hair to do it? How important is it for the man you're with to be comfortable with the way you wear your hair? For me, it is an absolute must that my significant other appreciate me in every look whether it be short hair or extremely long. Scared to bring up the topic of "weave" around your guy? Try explaining the process and showing some examples of the female celebrities he admires!
